Whatever prompted you to hang out your shingle as a business coach when you were so busy in your homeopathic practice?
I think that to answer this, I should go back in time to my graduation from the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine in 2002. You see, when I graduated, I assumed that I would get some business cards printed, rent an office space, and clients would simply come. That may sound a bit naive, I suppose, and in truth it was naive. But I had no one tell me that it would be any different! We’d had a business class (8 hours!) in school but there was no real discussion about marketing and no real straight-talk about how to make it happen. I just assumed that it would happen on its own.
But it didn’t. In my first year of practice, I had about 6 clients. I spent more money on one package of business cards than I made that year! I was discouraged but determined to soldier on. I tried to maintain my certainty that choosing to become a homeopath hadn’t been the single worst decision of my life and I told myself that next year would be better.
But it wasn’t. I floundered for four years – four whole years! – working a part-time job to keep my practice afloat, praying for money to fall from the sky, going deeper and deeper into debt. It was crazy. I was spending money in all the wrong places. I was wasting time and energy (which I should have been devoting to my clients), and my practice was tanking. I begged the Universe for a solution, and into my life walked my business coach and mentor, Pat Mussieux.
For the next five years, I worked hard, listened closely, read voraciously, and said YES to everything my coach suggested I do. Even the things I thought I could never do like raise my rates or say “no” to clients that were not ideal for me. But I did it. And it worked.
It wasn’t magic and it wasn’t rocket science but I could not have done it on my own. If I could have, I would have! Having a coach made the difference for me. Working with Pat saved me from losing my practice, from having to work at some other job for the rest of forever and being miserable to my last days. I built my practice to be exactly how I always dreamed it could be – I worked with clients I loved, surrounded myself with a team to support me, and I continued to work my medical art the way I knew it should be done.
When I was working away with my coach at building my practice, I noticed that others in my industry were not having the same experience. Many were still stuck where I had been, several had given up entirely. Colleagues began calling me, asking me if they could pick my brain, run an idea or two past me. Their lack of success began to concern me. And I began to worry in earnest about the future of our industry.
Several years ago, I began to express my worry to my own coach. I talked to her about my concerns for my colleagues and how I worried that, if something didn’t happen – and soon – the entire natural health industry would be no more. Not because government or Big Pharma forced us into submission. Not because there was no medical coverage for our services (in North America). Not because we weren’t really, really good at what we did. But because we were failing in our businesses. Because we had no idea what to do to reach the people that really needed our help the most. Because we were going broke.
Then she turned to me and said, “And so? What are you going to do about it? Wallow in the sadness of the situation or take action to prevent it from happening?”
And that’s when I began the transition, the learning, the study, to become a business coach for health and wellness professionals. The people of this world need the care that my colleagues can provide – and I want to ensure the success of my colleagues so that more and more people can have access to the health care they deserve.
How are you different from other business coaches?
Well, most obviously, one thing that separates me from other coaches is that I have actually worked in this industry and have operated a successful practice. I know where my clients are at – I have been there – and I know just what to do to shift them from that place of poverty to a place of prosperity!
It has been mentioned to me over the years that some coaches just don’t seem to understand that “health care is different” from other types of business. That’s a concern that I can alleviate right off the top – I’ve been working in health care since 1993. I ‘get’ the industry.
Something else that sets me apart, I think, is my understanding of what makes a person successful. As a homeopath, I looked at the state of a person’s health with a wholistic viewpoint. As a coach, I look at the state of a person’s business the same way. A business has a mental component, an emotional heart, a soul, and a “body” that encapsulates the other parts. There is alchemy to business. One must treat the whole business as a coach just as one must treat the whole person as a homeopath. It’s never just about ‘not enough clients.’ It’s about mindset, and marketing, and cash flow, and scheduling, and time management, and networking…it’s about all of that and more in business and I love taking the wholistic approach because that’s what really works!
I also think my personality sets me apart from other coaches. I love to laugh, I work hard and play harder, I shoot from the hip, and I know when to push and when to back off. I have been doing the dance with clients for so many years that I am a natural at meeting my clients where they are ‘at,’ helping them to see for themselves the reasons why they are there, and encouraging them to shift through it to achieve their goals.
What type of people do you work with?
My coaching clients are health and wellness professionals – chiropractors, nutritionists, doulas, homeopaths, naturopaths, Reiki Masters, aromatherapists, personal trainers, reflexologists, sound healers, counselors, RMT’s, therapists, coaches – the list goes on! But more important than their title is their personality and their goals.
I run a large company now with three separate divisions and I deal with all the trimmings and trappings of being a CEO who is also a single mom. I coach people who want to build busy, balanced practices that fit in with their busy, balanced lives because that’s what I do myself! I work best with people who want to work at what they love – and make money doing it. I choose to work with the crème-de-la-crème – health and wellness professionals – people who really understand the necessity of good business management and great health care and who will not sacrifice their integrity to fulfill that understanding.
Is there anyone you won’t work with?
I don’t have the time or the energy to work with clients who are not ready to do the work that is required to build a successful practice. I won’t work with complainers, whiners, or those who fall back on excuses all the time. I also will not work with anyone whose integrity I question – I want to help people who are authentically committed to making the world a better place by providing great health care. Anyone looking to build a practice on false promises, poor service, or shoddy product need not call me!
